A step by step process for doing anything | Productivity + confidence mindset
Kay, I don’t want to oversell this blog post…
…but these steps just might change your life and help you move towards getting literally anything that you want.
So often we get tripped up and then start making excuses about
why we can’t just do the damn thing
why we aren’t good enough to make shit happen
why we don’t deserve our dreams, yada, yada, yada…
It all gets a bit boring, doesn't it? Living in a huge whine fest and feeling sorry for ourselves is so not the vibe. And, more importantly, all this behaviour is doing is keeping you stuck in the same pattern.
It’s time to change that.
This blog post is going to break down the steps you need to take to accomplish pretty much anything by breaking down all of the bad habits, patterns and limiting beliefs that typically get in your way. Here we gooooo!
Allow the process to be messy
No one is good at anything right away. No one has everything figured out right away. So why do you expect yourself to?
Slow your roll and cut yourself some slack!
A classic example is babies learning to walk. They don’t just slide out and start doing the tango… First they learn to hold their heads up, then to lie on their tummies, then to crawl, then to stand and then, finally, to walk.
And they do it all without the overanalyzing and shame spiralling!
Look at all of the steps involved in learning to walk. And that’s something simple that literally most humans know how to do. So why would you imagine that getting healthy, creating a thriving social circle, finding the man of your dreams, changing careers, learning a new hobby or building a business would be any easier or require any less steps than something that is basic to most humans?
So the question becomes: can you sit with the discomfort and allow yourself to be NEW AND KIND OF BAD at something?
Stop and read that again, please.
This is the first key to moving towards anything. Thou shalt typically be le shit at new things.
And that’s okay.
If you can learn to have a beginners mindset and find ways to be okay with not being a prodigy at everything right away then you will literally triple your chances of success because you’ll keep going where others typically quit because they’re too embarrassed to look silly trying something new!
Take your first step even with your knees shaking.
AKA Feel the fear and do it anyways.
I really hate to say this because I genuinely wish it wasn’t true but…
You never get less afraid. Showing up just gets easier.
Things will never be less scary. And the longer you sit in a cycle of overwhelm and overanalyzing what to do, the worse the situation will get. Because eventually you’ll scare yourself and talk yourself out of doing the one thing that will actually move the needle forward.
Showing up. Doing the damn thing. Taking that first step even though you’re shitting it.
I wish for all of us that the process was somehow different, but the fear doesn’t ever go away. It just lessens over time as you continue showing up and the process of working towards your goals becomes more natural.
I’ve spoken recently on a podcast episode about how for years working on the podcast was scary and stressful. I had the idea to start a podcast back in 2016/2017 and didn’t actually get started until 2018. From that point on I only posted sporadically because I kept waiting until I “had something to say” because I was judging myself as “not good enough” to just share what was on my heart and mind.
Please read that again. I’m writing this post in 2023. The idea for a podcast came up in 2016/2017. I finally started it in 2018. Between 2018 and late 2022 (when I finally started posting episodes consistently) I published exactly 34 episodes for an average of 8.5 episodes per year.
So what changed?
I decided that I’m not here for that vibe (and my own whining #letsbereal) and I started to show up even though I was afraid, worried that I had nothing to say and that no one would like me. I felt the fear and did it anyway.
And that’s really the only way to move forward with any dream that’s worth pursuing.
Accept that failure is inevitable at one point or another
Failure will come a knockin’ at one point or another so the best strategy is not to avoid it but to create a mindset and a level of self-love and self-belief so strong that you can withstand the storm.
There will never be a way to avoid failure because it’s inevitable for all of us.
You will apply for a job and not get it. You will like someone who doesn’t like you back. You will launch something in your business to crickets. You will start and stop your workouts on the path to getting healthier.
It literally doesn’t matter what area of your life you’re working on, failure will make its appearance and so you’d best accept it and begin figuring out what you’re going to do when it does.
When failure comes pick yourself up and dust yourself off
Much like the aforementioned baby taking it’s first steps, failure will show up and knock you straight on your ass.
And much like that baby, it will be your job to pick yourself up and dust yourself off.
When things go sideways, sit with the shit feelings that come up. I know it’s unpleasant and you’d rather be doing basically anything else but that’s not the path towards what you want.
Because ignoring your feelings or pushing them down, will only leave them to pop up at a far less convenient time. So it’s best to just set aside a bit of time to feel like shit and lick your wounds and whatever else you need to do in order to move forward.
Once you’ve really felt whatever is coming up for you, it will be much easier to move through it. At this point you can decide how you want to feel and move on to the next step.
Take your next shaky step
This is pretty self-explanatory, no?
You have a dream that you’re working towards. You know you really want it. You took your first shaky steps, got some good momentum, fell on your face at one point and picked yourself back up.
Now is not the time to throw in the towel!
Take your next step even though you’re afraid and worried that you’ll fail again and what will your mother and aunt Esther think, etc. etc. None of that matters because you have a dream and you’re going for it!
Keep making progress until the process gets easier
This is where you’re building that self-belief and self-confidence muscle.
The more you show up for yourself and your dreams and the more you take action consistently, the more you build confidence in your abilities and a belief that this all might just work out and make showing up easier and easier!
This is the secret sauce that most people don’t even make it to because they’ve already quit a few steps back.
Because the magic is on the other side of you actually fucking doing something.
It is not on the other side of you whining, complaining or being afraid.
It’s not on the other side of you playing small and pretending that you don’t have dreams in the first place…
The magic is on the other side of you showing up consistently for yourself and your dreams and doing what it takes to make them a reality.
Now go get ‘em!
